The elevation profiles vary in accuracy and are best used to get a general feel for the ride terrain. Elevations are calculated at each route point based on public elevation databases. The number of route points in the ride, the accuracy of the elevation databases, and the terrain profile all contribute to the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the elevation graph and values. Road Bike Rides uses smoothing algorithms to compensate for variations in route point and elevation data.

We are constantly working to improve those algorithms. If any members have  insight into this issue we'd like to hear from you. We test route data against Garmin data to help fine tune our elevation code. If members have Garmin data for any of our route please send it in to further help us increase elevation accuracy.
