Just did this climb a few days ago - what a great climb. If you keep a nice sustainable pace the entire way it's not too hard at all. The grade remains pretty reasonable the entire way. I found the different climates you ride thru going up to be the most interesting part. The bottom half is warm & humid (duh); at about 5-6K you enter cloud banks & ride in the fog before popping out above to sunshine & lunar like landscape for the finish. Pretty cool. Views going up are fantastic (minus fog section of course). The only downer is lack of shoulder & traffic on the lower portions of ride. In general the pavement is in very good condition for almost the entire way. Warm layers for decent are a must. I got pretty wet & cold coming back down thru the mid level cloud layers
