This is a tough climb. If you plan on racing this event in the later part of August, bring plenty of gears (12-26 or 27).
Dirt lot on the side of the road.

There are two ways to climb to Mt. Charleston and both are great. The one listed here - Lee Canyon Rd - has very little traffic and climbs straight up for 17 miles at around 5-7% all the way to the ski resort. It started out really hot - 100 degrees, but got down to about 70 at the top. Make sure you bring enough water as there was nowhere to stop along the way. I had 4 bottles and I wished I had more for the way down.
You can also ride up Kyle Canyon Rd. It's a much easier climb for the first 20 miles - about 3-5%. Again, make sure you bring lots of water, but there is a lodge at the 20 mile point where you can stop for water. Then if you take 156 it gets much steeper - 7-9% - for another 4 miles, which for me was quite a good test of stamina.
I was really excited to find that Las Vegas has such a great mountain to climb (along with all the other sites!)
