This is a great loop in Mesa, AZ. There are some awesome vista views as you parallels the Salt River and ride up Usery Pass Rd. There is a good climb up Usery Pass Road. Great loop for a time trial or interval training.
Potential Hazards: In the late spring, summer and fall be careful of the trucks towing boats on the way to the lake. There is a good bike lane throughout the entire ride but just keep is safe by riding in the bike lane.
Park at the Red Mountain Park which is at Brown Rd and Power Rd. The park is on Brown Rd. just east of Power Rd.
Head west on Brown Rd, Turn right on Power Rd, Power Rd turns into Bush Hwy, Stay on Bush Hwy until you get to Usery Pass Rd, Climb up Usery Pass and then descend down Usery Pass Rd. Usery Pass Rd will turn into Ellsworth Rd. From Ellsworth Rd turn right on Brown Rd back to Red Mountain Park. If you are feeling good hit the loop for a 2nd and 3rd time.
There are plenty of places to eat along Power Rd. At Power Rd just south of the Hwy 60 there is a PF Chang's and a Chipotle.
At Bush Hwy and User Pass Rd on the north west corner of the road there are bathrooms.

This was my first road bike ride in AZ (apart from urban roads) - what a beautiful contrast to Ray Rd!
The climb up Usery Pass is slow going, but the descent down feels great. I saw several other riders but traffic was minimal.
Thanks for posting!
Great loop

I live in this area, and this loop is the reason why I took up road biking. I always saw people flying down the mountain and that looked like tons of fun. I was able to complete it this morning. I would definitely say that I am not an advanced rider, but I was able to complete it fairly easily. The big hill on Usery Pass kicked my butt a little. I think desert turtles were outpacing me going up the mountain at certain points. However the ride back down is fast and fun, especially when the road surface improves towards the end. The road condition overall would be the only drawback, it's not terrible but is in worse shape then most of the valley streets I ride on.
Decent route

I just moved to the Phoenix area a month ago and haven't been able to get out and ride much. I went and did this loop a week and a half ago. I took off around 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Not a heck of a lot of traffic once you get out on Bush Hwy and Usery Pass Rd.
I would definitely recommend doing this route clockwise as the quality of the pavement in the shoulder isn't exactly smooth. If you go clockwise, though, much of the descent is on better quality road surface. The climb is a little tougher going this direction but not horribly challenging. I spent all winter off the bike and was able to handle Usery on what was maybe my fourth or fifth ride of the year.
Enjoy!
